Shino & Flame

Shino & Flame is a collection of work exploring the varied surfaces of the Japanese shino-glaze tradition through wheel-thrown functional forms. Known for its warm whites, iron-rich oranges, and distinctive carbon markings, shino is especially responsive to variations in application, atmosphere, and placement within the kiln. My interpretation uses layers of shino glaze and soda ash to encourage surfaces that range from pale cream and smoky gray to rust, persimmon, and deep red-brown.

The surfaces vary from piece to piece. Some forms emerge softly mottled and nearly white, while others develop broad areas of orange flashing, dark carbon trapping, and small clusters of glaze texture. The glaze is applied with deliberate variation, allowing throwing lines, overlaps, and changes in thickness to remain visible. During reduction firing, flame and atmosphere move differently around each form, leaving evidence of its individual position within the kiln
