Collection: Iron & Rutile

Iron & Rutile is a collection of work exploring the interaction between two layered glazes: a dark, iron-rich tenmoku beneath a fluid rutile glaze. Tenmoku provides a deep brown-black foundation, while the rutile responds to variations in thickness, form, and firing atmosphere to produce shifting fields of indigo, violet, pale blue, and bronze.

The surfaces vary from piece to piece. Some forms are almost entirely enveloped in blue, while others retain broad areas of glossy tenmoku beneath the rutile. Deliberately staggered glaze lines reveal the individual layers and allow areas of clay to remain exposed. As the glazes melt, they overlap, break across rims and throwing lines, and gather into luminous bands and flowing edges.
